Reel Newz Briefs:

MELISSA MCCARTHY (Life of the Party) will star in the New Line comedy Margie Claus.  McCarthy will play the wife of Santa Claus, who has to put together a rescue team to save Christmas when Santa goes missing.  The film is scheduled for a November 15, 2019, release date.

SETH GORDON (Baywatch) will direct the drama Life in Rewind, the story of a young athlete coping with severe mental illness.

JAMES MANGOLD (Logan) will direct Sony’s remake of the 2015 French action thriller Disorder, about an ex-soldier with post traumatic stress disorder who is hired to protect the wife and child of a businessman.

DOUG LIMAN, who directed Tom Curise in the upcoming film American Made, is attached to direct the scientific adventure film Unearthed, based on the upcoming young adult novel by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.

A24 FILMS has acquired the distribution rights to Backstabbing for Beginners starring Theo James and Ben Kingsley in the true story of a United Nations worker involved with covert activity in Iraq.

BLEECKER STREET FLMS has acquired North American distribution rights to an untitled  documentary about the life of the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

ELIZABETH DEBICKI (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2) will voice one of the characters in director Luc Besson’s upcoming Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.  The film is scheduled for a June 21 release date.

SUSAN SARANDON will serve as executive producer on the feature documentary Soufra, a film about a refugee camp in Lebanon where a group of Syrian, Iraqi, Palestinian and Lebanese women came together to create a successful food catering company.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL (Life) is attached to star in and produce the true-life World War II adventure The Lost Airman.  The film tells the story of American Arthur Meyerowitz, a gunner in a B-24 bomber who was shot down in France in 1943 and spent six months in hiding before escaping to freedom with the help of the French resistance.

WILLEM DAFOE (Murder on the Orient Express) will play painter Vincent van Gogh in director Julian Schnabel’s upcoming film At Eternity’s Gate.

JAUME COLLET-SERRA (The Shallows) will direct the Annapurna Pictures film Waco, the story of the 1993 standoff in Waco, Texas, between the FBI and Texas state law enforcement and members of the Branch Davidians.

SAMUEL GOLDWYN FILMS has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Penelope Cruz comedy The Queen of Spain.  The film is the sequel to the 1998 film The Girl of Your Dreams, which also starred Cruz as Spanish movie star Macarena Granada.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA (Baywatch) is in talks to join Jim Parsons and Claire Danes in the independent drama A Kid Like Jake as well as the comedy Isn’t It Romantic opposite Rebel Wilson.

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL (Crazy Heart) will star in the independent film The Kindergarten Teacher, based on the Israeli film of the same name about a teacher who becomes obsessed with a child prodigy in her class.

CHARLIE HEATON (Shut In) is in talks to star in the X-Men spinoff film New Mutants, to play the character of Sam Guthrie (Cannonball).

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is the official title of Paramount’s upcoming sequel according to star Tom Cruise.  The film will begin shooting next year.

SONY PICTURES CLASSICS has acquired the distribution rights to the drama Final Portrait, the story of the friendship between American writer James Lord (played by Armie Hammer) and painter Alberto Giacometti (played by Geoffrey Rush).

UNIVERSAL is developing a film adaptation of Ruta Sepetys’ historical novel “Salt to the Sea,” based on the New York Times bestseller about four people on the ship MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a German military transport ship that sunk in the Baltic Sea in January of 1945.  More than 9,400 people died in the tragedy, the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.
