Reel Newz Briefs:

AMY ADAMS (Arrival) is in talks to join Christian Bale and Steve Carell in the cast of writer-director Adam McKay’s untitled film about vice-president Dick Cheney.  Bale will portray Cheney in the film.

JEREMY RENNER (Arrival) is in negotiations to star with Ed Helms in the comedy Tag.  The film is based on the true story of a group of friends who have been playing a no-holds-barred version of the children’s game of Tag for the last 30 years.

DAMIAN BICHIR (Alien: Covenant) will star in the horror-thriller The Nun, a spinoff film based on the demonic character from The Conjuring 2.

ERIC ROTH, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Forrest Gump, will pen Legendary Entertainment’s reboot of the science-fiction film Dune.  Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) will direct the film.

CATHERINE HARDWICKE (Twilight) will direct Sony’s remake of Miss Bala.  Miss Bala was the Mexican entry in the best foreign-language film at the 2011 Academy Awards and tells the story of a beauty pageant contestant who is kidnapped and forced to work for a drug cartel.

PARAMOUNT has optioned the film rights to the young adult novel “Labyrinth Lost,” by Zoralda Cordova.  The book tells the story of a Latina witch who tries to reject her magical destiny.

SIGOURNEY WEAVER (A Monster Calls) announced this week that filming of Avatar 2 will begin next fall.  Weaver will star in the sequel along with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

GEMMA CHAN (Transformers: The Last Knight) has joined Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh in Warner’s film adaptation of the bestselling book “Crazy Rich Asians.”

MICHAEL KEATON (The Founder) is in talks to reunite with director Tim Burton (Batman Returns) on Walt Disney’s live-action remake of Dumbo.  Keaton would play the villain in the film.

RIDLEY SCOTT (Alien: Covenant) is working with Fox developing Battle of Britain, a film about England’s air war against Nazi Germany that began in July of 1940.

SAM MENDES (Spectre) is in negotiation to direct a film adaptation of the Emil Ferris graphic novel “My Favorite Thing is Monsters.”   The story tells of a 10-year-old girl who tries to solve the murder of her elderly upstairs neighbor. 

MICHAEL MCCULLERS, the screenwriter of The Boss Baby, will adapt Garth Nix's children’s book “Frogkisser!" for Fox Animation.  The film will be a fairy tale musical about a princess who can break curses with magic-assisted kisses.
