REEL NEWZ BRIEFS:

ZOE SALDANA (Live By Night) will play the lead role in the action-thriller Hummingbird, about a female black-ops assassin whose latest assignment may compromise her true identity.

MICHAEL PENA (Chips) will star in the sci-fi film Extinction with Ben Young (Hounds of Love) set to direct. Pena will play a man tormented by a dream about losing his family in a brutal alien invasion of Earth.

JOHNNY KNOXVILLE (Jackass) will star in and produce a comedy that has Knoxville and his friends designing and operating a theme park.  The Paramount film is tentatively titled Action Park and will begin filming in South Africa next month.

RALPH FIENNES (The Invisible Woman) will direct a film based on the life of Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev.  The film is based on Julie Kavanagh’s book “Rudolf Nureyev: The Life."

MIKE MITCHELL (Trolls) will direct Warner’s upcoming sequel to the The Lego Movie.

SAOIRSE RONAN (Brooklyn) is attached to star in Sweetness in the Belly, based on the novel by Camilla Gibb about a disenfranchised community in London.

PENELOPE CRUZ (The Queen of Spain) will star with Edgar Ramirez (Gold) in the dark comedy Love Child. Todd Solondz (Weiner-Dog) will direct the film.

MEL GIBSON, Academy Award Best Director nominee for Hacksaw Ridge, will co-star with Vince Vaughn in the crime-thriller Dragged Across Concrete.  The film will deal with police brutality and will be directed by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk).

KEANU REEVES (John Wick: Chapter 2) will star in the romantic thriller Siberia. playing an American diamond trader trying to sell blue diamonds to buyers in Russia.  Matthew Ross (Frank & Lola) will direct the film.

COLIN FARRELL (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) is in talks to join Denzel Washington in the legal drama Inner City, about a crusading law firm in a big city.  The film will be written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler).

VIOLA DAVIS (Fences) is attached to star with Julia Roberts in the film adaptation of Jodi Picoult’s novel “Small Great Things,” for Amblin Partners.  Picoult also wrote “My Sister’s Keeper,” which was made into a film in 2009.

NICOLE KIDMAN (Lion) is in talks to portray Atlanna, Aquaman’s mother in the upcoming DC Comics film Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa as the superhero title character.

LEONARDO DI CAPRIO (The Revenant) will star in and produce the version of Stephan Talty’s upcoming book “The Black Hand: The Epic War Between a Brilliant Detective and the Deadliest Secret Society in American History.”  The book will be released in April and is set in New York City in 1903, when a crime wave swept the city.

LIAM NEESON (Silence) will star in the action revenge thriller Hard Powder, a remake of the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance.  Neeson will play a heroic snowplow driver in Colorado who seeks vengeance on the drug cartel that murdered his son.
